BOYS OZTAG

Georges River Oztag Rules 2023
Football/soccer boots are ALLOWED to be worn.

Game times: Juniors – 2 x 12 minute halves Seniors – 2 x 15 minute halves
Maximum of 8 players per side on field at any one time.

Objective: place ball over the opponent’s try line and the team with the ball has six “tags” to attempt to score.
The ball must always be passed in a backwards direction.
Defender must remo
ve one tag to stop attackers progress. Defender then holds up the tag and drops it to the
ground marking where the “play the ball” should occur. The rest of the defending team must retreat 7m.
A “play the ball” is when the tagged player uses their foot to roll the ball between their legs. The attacking

player who receives the ball is called the “dummy half”. The defender standing nearby is called the “marker”.
- All shirts must be tucked in.
- Play commences with a place kick. It must travel at least 10m.

- If the ball lands in the field of play and then rolls across the try line whether touched or not, a line
drop out occurs.
- Place kicks and drop outs can be above shoulder height
- If a player propels the ball in a forward direction with their hand or arm and the ball comes into
contact with the ground, an opponent or the referee, a knock on will be awarded.
- A changeover will be awarded to the non-offending team. The referee may allow the non-offending
team to take possession and gain an advantage. If they are tagged, it will be a zero tag. - An attacker
cannot deliberately bump into the defender.
- A defender cannot change direction and move into an attacker’s path. Whoever initiates contact will
be penalised.
- The onus is on the attacking player to avoid contact with the defender.
- A player cannot jump to avoid a tag but they can spin (body control must be maintained).
- The ball carrier is not allowed to protect his tag or fend off defenders (NO FENDING).
- The ball may not be kicked until after the fourth tag
- Kicks in general play cannot be above the shoulder height of the referee.
- After a try is scored, the team that DOESN’T score, restarts play with a tap.
- The defensive line can move forward from being 7m back, only when dummy half touches the ball.
- If a defender is offside, and makes a tag, a penalty with a tap restart is awarded to the tagging team.
- Dummy half can run and be tagged with the ball.
- Dummy half may score a try.
- An attacker must stop and play the ball if he is in possession with only one tag on.
- All players must wear both tags to be in play (ATTACKING ONLY).
- After playing the ball, the ball-player puts the dropped tag on his shorts.
- Simultaneous tag = play on. (If the referee is unable to decide, the pass is allowed play on. The
advantage goes to attacking team.)
- If the ball is kicked or passed into the referee, the referee will order a changeover where he was
struck. - If a player falls on the ground, he is deemed tagged and will play the ball.
- Unsportsmanlike conduct covers the behaviour and attitude of players on the field and may result in
penalty, sin bin or dismissal.
- Commercial tags or modified tags can be used. Modified tags must be between 5cm and 9cm in width
and have a minimum of 36cm hanging, and a maximum of 12cm tucked over the elastics of the shorts.
